As the 2023-24 school year comes to an end, that also means that sports are wrapping up for MHS. Seniors will be leaving highschool athletics behind and underclassmen will fill a bigger role in athletics in 2025. MHS seniors have shown great leadership throughout all sports for their teams through this school year. Now that the seniors are moving on, I wanted to ask some underclassmen how they will fill those shoes of the seniors and continue where the upperclassmen left off. I asked a couple of underclassmen what would be their expectations next year now that the seniors are leaving.
Upcoming senior, Dee Cutts said, “I feel like as seniors we should all buy in and hold the underclassmen accountable.” Dee was a valuable player for both the football and basketball teams in the 2023-24 season and will continue to play a big role in leading his team, and being a mentor to younger athletes as a senior next year. I also asked upcoming senior and the running back for Montevallo High School, Razareo “Mook” Conwell, “ The seniors last year left off on a good note and us as the upcoming seniors should pick it up where they left off and continue to get better.” Razareo had a breakout junior season and knows what it takes to take the next step for individual and team success and will lead by example for his team next fall. The last student athlete I interviewed isn’t an upcoming senior, but he will play a crucial role because he will be Montevallo’s new starting quarterback this coming fall. Jordan Ward exclaimed on hard work on and off the field, being a leader, and buying into the program, “lead and work on and off the field, making sure the team is doing what they need to do to be successful.”
Not only the upperclassmen but also making sure upcoming underclassmen are doing what they need to do for the teams success. These three future leaders are really excited to lead their teams to success in the next upcoming season. They’re starting to carry out and expand the culture that the previous seniors created and will fulfill the role to the best of their ability to obtain team success next fall!
