Mrs.O’Connor’s environmental classes went on a field trip to the Cahaba River this week. During this trip students learned about many different things. The Cahaba River is 194 miles long so you could imagine how much of the river there was to explore. The students did many different activities, one of them being a fishing activity. The technique involved a group of students being the shufflers and two people holding the net. Many different types of fish were caught during the four rounds of this activity. Students also had to figure out if the fish were bottom feeders, top feeders, or middle feeders. As a group, students identified them by looking at how their mouth was positioned. The last activity was catching animals with our hands and sorting it out in groups. Students learned more about the environment, how to keep it clean, and it was a very fun experience. The Cahaba River is surrounded by many different rivers including the Alabama River and the Mobile River. One fun fact from the trip was about the biggest fish caught in the Cahaba River which was 360 pounds. The director Ms.Scott made it very interesting and exciting.
