This year marks the ten year anniversary of the tragedy that happened on September 11, 2001. On this day many people reflect exactly where they were and what they were doing when the attacks took place. As the years pass many begin to forget the reason why we fight so hard to have our freedom, and may begin to forget the lives that were sacrificed for us.
“I remember I was in first grade when the towers were attacked,” junior Megan Draper said. “My teacher, Mrs. Smith, turned on the television to where it was being broadcasted. At the time I had no idea what was going on, so when I came home my father explained everything to me and my sisters. Since he is a chief of a fire station he knew exactly what was happening and what the fire fighters and policemen had to undergo.”
For many others, like junior Josy Martires, the events were not as greatly pronounced.
“I was still living in Mexico when the tragedy happened,” Martires said. “Yes, we heard about it, and I am sure the talk was among the adults about what was happening, but I was so young that I was not very informed about this until I grew older and came to America. In class we would do something to commemorate the event, and that’s when I began to understand what really had happened.”
Hearts around the world were broken as the planes crashed into the towers, killing thousands of people. America should not be fearful that something like this will happen again, but that generations will let this be forgotten as time progresses further away from that day.
