The Lady Dogs’ softball team has gained much success this season, winning the area championship, and playing in the regional tournament, beginning Friday, May 10.
“The team has made great strides throughout the year,” Coach Nicole Ivey said. “So, I expected them to play well post-season.”
The team’s dedication and serious commitment to performing well has paid off.
“Preparation before every game includes routines in stretching and agilities as a team,” Ivey said. “Then they complete hitting drills and work on their throwing routine.”
Working toward the area tournament, the Lady Dogs defeated Jemison 9-4, Monday, April 22 at Jemison, improving their record to 18-12-1. Senior Megan Draper had two hits, and senior Savannah Upton, junior Kaley Kornegay, freshman Destiny Upton and eighth grader Lacey Hamrick each had one hit. D. Upton earned the win as pitcher with 15 strikeouts.
Success continued when they defeated Homewood 7-6 at Homewood, Tuesday, April 23 making them 19-12-1. Kornegay pitched for Montevallo earning the win with 4 strike-outs and giving up minimal hits. Also, Kornegay had 2 singles and a double during the game. Freshman Megan Dockery had 2 singles and a home run. Junior Erin Draper, and eighth graders Emri Hannah and Hamrick all contributed with 2 hits each.
“I am so proud of this team,” Ivey said. “They have worked hard this year, and they should be proud of their accomplishments.”
The softball team’s win for the Class 3A, Area 6 championship came after defeating Tarrant 15-0, Leeds 5-4 and Leeds 13-12 in Leeds, Thursday, May 2. The team begins the Regional tournament in Troy Friday, May 10.
