At the arrival of football season, senior Brett Gray was more than ready for his last year of football to be a good one.
“This year I would love for our team to grow and play well together so that we could possibly win a few games,” Gray said.
Gray has been playing football for three years now and everyone knows him as the kicker. Former football coach, Jim King, persuaded Gray to play for him his sophomore year, and although King moved to Mountain Brook High School, Gray considers him to be the most influential coach he has had at Montevallo High School.
Before Gray started to play football, the sport he mostly focused on was soccer. Gray played for twelve years and passed his passion for soccer on to his sisters as well. Last year, Gray was also a part of the tennis team, and played as the number three boys’ player.
Aside from sports, Gray is an academic leader. Two years ago he received the honor of going on a week-long trip to California as the recipient of the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership award. He proved his leadership skills at the state-wide level and was chosen to represent Alabama at the World Leadership Congress. He was one of only two candidates who traveled to California to stay on UCLA’s campus, attend leadership workshops and meet other outstanding students from all over the country.
Gray also participates in Battle of the Books, First Priority, Peer Helpers, Mu Alpha Theta, and serves as sports editor of SPOTLIGHT and president of the National Honor Society.
“As high school comes to a close I realize that I will miss all my friends that I have grown up with since preschool,” Gray said. “I hope that we stay in touch, but only time will tell. I have many memories here at MHS, and this school will always be a part of me no matter where I go in life.”
