March 1st marks the beginning of Women’s History month. Women’s History month actually started in Santa Rosa ,California, as a March 2nd- 8th in 1978. But in February 1980, President Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation declaring the Week of March 8th 1980 as National Women’s History Week, and by 1986, 14 states had declared March to be Women’s History Month.
We celebrate the women in history because they have fought tirelessly and courageously for equality, justice, and opportunity in our nation. One way that these women fought for are rights was through the women’s suffrage movement which was started by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. This was a important movement because it helped to create the 19th amendment.
