The Future Teachers of America of Montevallo High School went to the FTA State Convention at Auburn Friday and Saturday, February 22-23, during which time senior Emily Colley was selected as State FTA President.
“I didn’t have a ‘true’ campaign,” Colley said. “They were taking nominees from the floor, and Isabel Gallo nominated me. A girl from Hoover was prepared and passing out candy, but I wrote my speech in 10 minutes before I went on stage. In the end, I felt blessed to be chosen.”
FTA sponsor Dawn Cabrera is proud of Colley, believing the right choice was made.
“I believe Emily will be an excellent president,” Cabrera said. “She has developed a passion to help others.”
As FTA President, she will organize this upcoming convention including the location, the theme, presenters, activities and the food.
Also, junior Dylan Sanders was elected to serve as a state board member, and he will run to be a state officer for 2014-2015.
This year, FTA plans to tutor at Children’s Hospital, make and distribute Easter baskets at a nursing home and students at Montevallo Elementary and participate in several university tours. Veteran members have plans to teach side-by-side with a teacher at MES and MMS throughout this school year.
