During homecoming week, Sept. 6 – 9, students throughout the school waited patiently to hear who the homecoming queen for 2011 would be. Finally, during the half time show on Friday, Sept. 9, representatives from every grade lined up on the football field in their gowns while the band played. Seniors Maryann Lee, Kentessia Simpson and Sherrel Keith waited to hear their name called over the speaker.
“Your 2011 homecoming queen is…. Maryann Lee,” Coach Niven said.
The crowd cheered with excitement as last year’s queen, Amber Cardwell, crowned Lee and she stood with composure then humbly walked off the field smiling, while many spectators stood nearby taking pictures with Lee and the other attendants.
Lee participates in many activities at MHS, including National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and First Priority. She is the editor of SPOTLIGHT, vice-president of FTA, plays tennis, and is a member of the volleyball team. Regardless of such numerous responsibilities, Lee stays focused on her future plans.
“I plan to attend the University of Montevallo and major in elementary education. I want to be a second or third grade teacher,” Lee said. “I hope to travel the world someday as well, and eventually have a family.”
Outside of school, Lee also stays busy.
“I enjoy going to the movies and hanging out with friends,” Lee said. “Also, I am very active with my church.”
Lee is laid back and sometimes keeps quiet, but when she hits the court for volleyball, people tend to see another side of her.
“Maryann is a vital part of the team, as a player and as a consistent encouraging influence for the team as a whole,” head volleyball coach Tena Niven said.
Lee is very close to her family. Lee says that her sister, Kimbrell, is a huge influence in her life. She is a devoted Christian and the perfect role model.
“My sister has always been my role model,” Lee said. “She comes to a few of my games cheering me on. She’s my biggest fan.”
Lee is pleased to be chosen as homecoming queen this year.
“I am honored to be chosen by my classmates, and I intend to represent MHS well,” Lee said.
