The undefeated Bulldogs defeated region foe Midfield to become 4-0 in a 35-20 victory at Theron Fisher Stadium, Friday, September 16.

“Tonight we came out strong and played really hard in the first half,” head coach Brandon Wilcox said. “We have to learn to sustain that energy and effort for four Quarters if we want to beat good teams down the road. I thought Coach Davidson did a great job with our defensive front and they played their best game tonight. It is great to get another win!”

Senior quarterback Zac Oden opened up the game with a pass to senior Treshawn Brown which led to a touchdown by senior Caleb Chappel.

Later in the first quarter, junior Tavarius Holman ran the ball and scored to put the Bulldogs up 14-0.

Midfield attempted to gain yardage, but was stopped with a sack from junior Demetrius Smith.

In the second quarter, Oden made a quick toss to Brown for a touchdown with the extra point kicked by senior Diego Martinez, putting the Dogs up 21-0.

During the Bulldogs next possession, Oden passed the ball which was tipped by Brown and recovered by junior Daqwan Bryant.  Following the recovery, Oden passed the ball back to Bryant for the touchdown.

With 5 seconds on the clock, Midfield scored off a kickoff return followed by a two-point conversion leaving the score 28-8.

During the second half, the Patriots attempted a screen pass to gain yardage, but were stopped as a result of a sack by Holman.  Midfield then punted the ball to a receiving Bryant who made a large gain in yards before going out of bounds.

With the Dogs unable to score, Midfield threw a 50-yard pass putting them in scoring position.  The following play, Midfield threw a quick pass to score a touchdown.  They were unable to get the two-point conversion.  With Montevallo unable to make progress offensively, the Patriots scored again during their next possession off a vertical pass putting the Dogs up by just eight points.

On their next possession, Montevallo dominated the clock working their way down the field inside the red zone.  Oden handed the ball off to Bryant for a final touchdown for the Dogs.

“We played well defensively the first half,” Smith said.  “We got too comfortable with them the second half and as result they scored on us more than they should have.  When we realized they were coming back, we stopped them.”

Oden completed 22 of 37 passes for 278 and 3 touchdowns.  Chappel carried the ball 10 times for 52 yards and 1 touchdown.

Brown led the Dogs in catches with 6 for 73 yards and 1 touchdown.  Bryant had 7 catches for 66 yards and 1 touchdown.  He also scored on a touchdown run.

“It was a good team win,” Bryant said.  “Somethings didn’t  go the way we planned, but we still came together to gain the victory.”

Holman had 6 catches for 74 yards and 1 touchdown.
